Sleepwalking can lead to other complex sleep behaviors. People can grab their keys, get in their cars, and drive away—all while asleep. Sometimes the ride passes without incident. Some sleep drivers have been picked up for apparent DUI (driving while under the influence) or been involved in car accidents during these episodes. Most of the cases of sleep driving that have come to our attention have been associated with the use of sleep medications, such as Ambien.
Potential forensic implications:
- DUI
- industrial accidents
- motor vehicle accidents
- resisting arrest
